Aligarh, November 24: "The citation metrics are considered as conclusive evidence of academic quality by research journals, governments, institutions and corporations. Funding agencies look to them as evidence of top academic performance," said Dr Jayakumar, Chockalingam, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.
He was delivering the web talk, 'Impact of Research and Citation Metrics', a part of the online lecture series on 'New Landscape of Library and Information Science' organised by the Department of Library and Information Science, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
Dr Jayakumar delineated value and recognition of research citations for determining the impact of a quality research work.
He opined that the game of metrics is being widely used for decision making especially for ranking the research institutes and individual researchers.
"Citations are indicators of publication significance, utility, attention, visibility and direct measurements of value and worth of impact of a research work," emphasised Dr Jayakumar.
Speaking on the aphorism, 'Publish or Perish', Dr M Masoom Raza (Chairman, Department of Library and Information Science) in the welcome address discussed the impact of the pressure to publish academic work in order to succeed in academic career.
Dr Muzamil Mushtaq conducted the programme and moderated the question and answer session.
