About the Department

The Department of Biochemistry was established in 1962 as one of the pre-clinical Departments in the Faculty of Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University, India. The department has made enormous progress in advanced research and teaching. Since inception, the faculty members of the Department have been pursuing clinically oriented research, and till date the department has successfully awarded 128 Ph.D., 76 M.Phil. and 44 M.D. degrees. The teachers of the Department have presented over 550 research papers in various scientific meets/conferences and have published over 450 research papers, mostly in peer reviewed International Journals of high repute. The department have successfully operated around 50 major research projects funded by agencies like UGC, ICMR, DAE, DBT, CSIR, UPCST etc. The research work of the department has been widely acclaimed, both at National and International levels. At present 02 research projects are under operation in the Department and few more have been submitted for funding. The Department has been identified for assistance by the DST under the FIST programme in level 1 category. The M.D. degree of the department has been recognized by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The Department is presently involved in the teaching of MBBS, BDS, DMLT, Diploma in Physiotherapy and Diploma in dialysis students besides active research. The Department is having a full fledged molecular diagnostic facility for SLE, Cancer and Tuberculosis. The alumni of the department have earned teaching and research positions in prestigious institutions in various countries including the United States, European Nations and Arab Countries.
