ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Botany is one of the oldest departments in the university. It was established as an independent department in 1923, in which post-graduate teaching was started as early as in 1930 an research in 1935. The present building of the department came into existence in 1931 by the financial assistance of His Exalted Highness Nizam of Hyderabad. The main thrust area of teaching and research are Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology, Cytogenetics & Plant Breeding, Environmental Botany, Plant Biotechnology, Systemic Botany and Allelopathy. Presently, teaching activities include under-graduate and post-graduate semester courses and Ph.D. programmes. The department has made a steady progress in all these areas.
At present, 15 Professors, 02 Associate Professors and 12 Assistant Professors with 36 supporting staff are working in the department. The department has produced 04 D.Sc., 450 Ph.D. so far. About 4500 research papers and 60 books on different aspects have been published. The department has also organized Seminar/Symposium/Conference/Summer school. The department also provides training to students from various parts of the country, and invites eminent scientists for delivering popular scientific talks very often. The department has distinction in having its alumni placed at various respectable positions all over the globe. The departmental library has significant number of books and periodicals and subscribe journals. The department also maintains a Botanical Garden at the University Fort covering an area of about 95 acres. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Government of India) recommended it as a Lead Botanical Garden of North India.
The department has been identified for special assistant grant by various funding agencies including UGC-SAP (DRS-II), DST-FIST, DST-PURSE and DBT-BUILDER. Faculty members of the department have received research projects funded from various agencies, such as Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science & Technology, University Grants Commission, UP-Council of Science & Technology, BNRS and Newton Bhabha (BBSRC-DBT) and UGC- Start up grants. Faculty members also received various awards such as INSA-Young Scientist Medal, Prof. Hiralal Chakravorty Award, Vigyan Ratan Samman, Panchanan Maheshwari Gold Medal, UGC-Research Award, UGC-Mid Career Award, Young Scientist/Eminent Scientist Award of National Environmental Science Academy. The members have also been recognized by various academic NGOs for excellence in research and teaching and honoured by various awards. They serve as specialist in various capacity in the academic bodies. The faculty members of the department received various fellowships, Raman Fellowship and INSA-DFG Fellowship, to get advance training of research abroad. They have also presented research work in national and international conferences. The department also received post-doctoral fellowship by CSIR, DST, UGC and DBT.
Vision and Mission
*The vision of the department is to be a centre of excellence in thrust areas of the research and to equip our students to meet the nations demand.
*The department also intends to expand academic co-operation by offering new courses and upgrading programmes to a wider spectrum of students and researchers.
