About the Department
HISTORY
The department of Surgery was established in 1964. The Founding Chairman of the Department was Late Prof. S. Ammar Hasan. In 1971, MCI gave permission to start the course of M.S. in General Surgery and the first batch of PG students was examined in 1973. In 1981, the allied specialities (ENT, Anaesthesiology, Orthopedics) were separated from the Department. In 2012, three Super specialty departments- Neurosurgery, Pediatric Surgery, Cardio-thoracic Surgery- were created from the department to start MCh courses.
INTRODUCTION
The present Faculty strength is 15 consultants, 6 Senior Resident and 58 Residents. Major thrust of the Department is on advancement of surgical research, education and innovation, especially minimal access surgery and the development of special clinics in diabetic foot, infertility, thyroid, breast, Urology, ERCP and upper/ lower G.I. Surgery.
The emphasis is on imparting extensive theoretical and practical training to the Junior Residents not only through the Teachers of the Department but also by inviting eminent surgeons and clinicians to deliver useful lectures for their benefit.
STATISTICS
Total attendance of the OPD in the year 2015 it was 44708, in the year 2016 it was 47945, in the year 2017 it was 47493, in the year 2018 it was 51856 and in the year 2019 it was 59056.
Total admissions in General Surgery ward in the year 2015 it was 3360 and in the year 2016 it was 5369, in the year 2017 it was 2608, in the year 2018 it was 3076 and in the year 2019 it was 3495.
Total number of Emergency Casualty Admissions in the year 2015 it was 4554, in the year 2016 it was 4742, in the year 2017 it was 1391, in the year 2018 it was 1152 and in the year 2019 it was 1294
Total Emergency operations done in the year 2015 it was 1441,in the year 2017 it was 1407 in the year 2019 it was 1294.
Total number of elective operations done in the year 2015 it was 1320 and in the year 2016 it was 1841, in the year 2017 it was 1102 and in the year 2018 it was 1119.
Total number of Laparoscopic surgeries done in the year 2015 it was 740, in the year 2016 it was 512, in the year 2017 it was 669, in the year 2018 it was 293 and in the year 2019 it was 748.
Total number of Upper GI Endoscopy done in the year 2015 it was 948 and in the year 2016 it was 842, in the year 2017 it was 454, in the year 2018 it was 441 and in the year 2019 it was 734.
Total number of Lower GI Endoscopy done in the year 2015 it was 461 and in the year 2016 it was 412, in the year 2017 it was 1391 in the year 2018 it was 1162 and in the year 2019 it was 566.
Total number of ERCP done in the year 2015 was 30, in the year 2016 it was 82, in the year 2017 it was 77, in the year 2018 it was 45 and in the year 2019 it was 32.
TEACHING
The syllabi for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching are revised every year to accommodate the latest developments. There is a set schedule of M.S. General Surgery teaching programme 5 days in a week with digital ICT facilities including LCD Projector & Laptop.

High Dependency Unit (HDU) has started functioning in the surgical ward.
The surgery Operations Theaters (OT 1 & 2) have been upgraded by installation of High Definition (HD) monitors for Laparoscopic Surgery.
