About the Department
The Department of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology was established in 1995 as a section of Institute of Agriculture and upgraded to a full-fledged department in the year 2000 under the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, AMU, Aligarh.
The Department is well equipped with laboratories and facilities for product development, microbiology, food analysis, instrumentation, computer, food engineering, etc.
The Department offers M. Tech. in agricultural process and food engineering and Ph. D. in post harvest engineering and technology programmes. The Department has now planned to start self finance B.Tech (Food Technology) programme from the onward session as there is a lot of scope of the candidates passing out B.Tech in the food industries and other related organisations. Over hundred post graduates have been produced to meet the challenges and requirements of the food industries. Most of the students are well placed in India and abroad, holding prominent positions in food processing companies and educational as well as research institutions.
The broad objectives of the department's present programmes include post graduate teaching in relevant fields, conducting basic and applied research and transfer of technology activities. Department is well recognized all over India for its work in the field of cereal, fruits & vegetable based value added functional food products, value added functional livestock products, pet-food, biocolours from agricultural wastes, jaggery, chicory, biomass, etc.
The Department is waiting for the ICAR grant to be sanctioned as a source of research & development. Due to lack of funding during 2017-18 & 2018-19, the Department suffered a lot in respect of infrastructure and research work. The Department looks forward and will concentrate on the unique or strong programs that have the potential to move to excellence.
