About the Department
Brief Introduction of the Department: The Department of Physical Health and Sports Education was started with a grant from U.G.C. vide letter No. F-2-1/88(SPE) dated May 31st, 1988. This grant was made available for introduction of 3 years Degree Course in Physical Health and Sports Education.
The Department was started during 1990-91 session. The first batch of B.A. (Hons.) in Physical Health and Sports Education has passed out in 1992-93 session. The Master of Physical Education (M.P.E.) and Ph.D. courses were started during 1994-95 and 1999-2000 respectively. The course of M.P.E. and B.P.E. have been discontinued from the session 2008-2009 and 2009-10 respectively. The Department has introduced B.P.Ed. course in 2007-08 with an intake of 50 seats and also introducing M.P.Ed. course in academic session 2011-12 with an intake of 30 seats as per the guidelines of the National Council of Teacher Education (N.C.T.E.). All the above courses are being run in the Department to fulfill the need of trained leadership in Physical Education. The admission in various courses is open to both the sexes.
The department has currently over 100 bonafide students in its two year Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.), two years Master of Physical Education (M.P.Ed.) courses and Ph.D. Programmes.
The Department has been actively pursuing research in different fields of Physical Education with present day faculty position of 03 Professors, 02 Associate Professors and 05 Assistant Professors.
The Department has a growing research programme in the areas of Sports Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Motor Skills & Sport Psychology, Physical Activity and Health, Sports Management and Sports Sociology.
During the last five years, the Department has published more than 40 International and 60 National level research papers in referred Journals. The department has already organized U.G.C. sponsored 04 National Seminars and 04 Workshops in Physical Education and Sports Sciences, and is going to organize an International Conference in November, 2012, as well.
At present, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has accorded the status of SAP(DRS-I) to the Department for 05 years on the basis of excellent academic achievements.
Three UGC Major Research Projects and two Minor Research Projects have already been completed by the faculty members & research scholars and one UGC-SAP(DRS-I) Programme is in progress at the Department.
The Department has a well furnished and spacious Seminar Library with very rich collection of books featuring:- Text Books (5223 Nos.), Journals (155 Nos.).
The Department of Physical Health and Sports Education offers an impressive range of facilities and equipment, which operate at the cutting edge of Physical Health and Sports Sciences.
