Department of Shia Theology is a part of Faculty of Theology, Aligarh Muslim University. Faculty of Theology is one of the oldest Faculties of A.M.U. Sir Syed established the Nizamat of Sunni and Shia Theology and invited prominent Sunni and Shia religious scholars to head it . The Nizamats developed into teaching Faculty in 1960. .

The Department of Shia Theology is not only the oldest, but also unique in the way that it is the only specialized centre of Shia Studies in Indian Universities. As such is held in high esteem not only in India but also in Iran, Iraq and other countries.

Department of Shia Theology has a rich history. It was headed by scholars of International repute. In its history , it had outstanding world famous scholars like Allama Ali Naqi Naqvi, Allama Mujtaba Hasan Kamoonpuri, and Professor Maulana Kalbe Abid sahib , who had hundreds of books published in various languages throughout world.

Every year Department of Shia Theology is visited by very eminent personalities. Among the eminent visitors have been Dr Haddad Adel, prominent Iranian personality and Dr Ali Akbar Vilayati, long serving ex-Foreign Minister of Iran and many others. Dr Khuzair Jafar Khuzai, Vice-President of Republic of Iraq is an alumni of this Department.
