The Central
Library of the Aligarh Muslim University, Maulana
Azad Library is one of the largest university
libraries of the world which provides access to about 18,00,000 volumes of
books, 60,000 plus current journals and about 20,00,000 research papers in hard
and soft copies. In addition, there are over 100 sister libraries
(college/seminar libraries). The Library
of Z. H.
College of Engineering and Technology, is one of them. It is the second largest library of the
University.

The Library of Z. H.
College of Engineering and Technology, was established in 1938 with only 300
books and the number has gone over 1,87,000. In the last three years, 10,678 number
of books have been added; number of additions in 2018-2019 alone is 2850.
The college library caters
to the needs of more than 2500 UG, PG students and research scholars apart from
about 225 teaching faculty. Presently the library is placed in a two-storied
building with a total covered area of about 1000 sq.m. having three air
conditioned reading rooms with a capacity of 220 persons. There is also an Electronic Periodical Section through
which 12 users can access online journals at a time. Beside this, they can also
access from their Laptops, laboratories and departmental libraries. Apart from the main college library, the
college has departmental libraries in each of the eleven departments of the
College.
The College Library is automated with Libsys 7.0 software which connects almost all computers of the library and the different departments of the college. Books are issued through bar-coded membership cards to the Post Graduate students and faculty members of the College from the circulation section. The books and other reading materials are issued to the college students for reading room study from the issue counter. The Catalogue of the College Library is available on internet/intranet for search. Books are tagged for security. The RFID security system and Sixteen CCTV cameras are installed to ensure safety of the Library materials. The College Library is also equipped with Fire Alarm Control Panel, 13 Modular automatic fire extinguishers and 10 manually operated fire extinguishers. Over 500 students, teachers and other members visit the Library almost every day. A register is maintained in the library and the visitor has to show his valid identity card at the entrance.
'New Arrivals'
and 'Staff Publications' are displayed in showcases at the entrance of the
Library. Two computers are installed for searching books through Open Public Access
Catalogue (OPAC) at the entrance. Traditional
catalogue is available in the Central Hall. The library runs in two shifts from 8:00 am till 10:00 pm
on all working days. During examinations, College Library runs in three shifts from 08:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight and also open on weekends
from 09:00 a.m. to 04:00 p.m. and in vacation, it remains open from 08:00 a.m.
to 04:00 p.m. The library is having 01 Assistant Librarian, 08 technical staff, one UDC (admin.), four MTS (Office Attendants), 03 MTS (Library Attendant) and 03 Daily Wagers. The library offers
photocopying service to students and staff on nominal charges.
College Book Bank
The Book Bank of Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University, is one of the oldest book banks among technological institutions in India. It was established in the year 1964 with the objective of helping the students of B.Sc Engg. who could not afford to purchase the text books. Grant from Third Five Year Plan was used in establishing the book bank.
It caters to the need of under graduate students of eight branches of studies viz. Architecture, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Electronics, Petrochemical and Mechanical Engineering, in addition to B.E students. All UG B.Tech, B.Arch. and B.E students get full set of textbooks as recommended by the concerned departments on nominal charges of 15% of the book cost for the entire session. A student can become the member of the Book Bank by depositing Rs.25/- as the registration fee for once in an academic year. This section is running with the collection received from the students on no loss no profit basis. The number of books in this section is about 1,07,400. The Rules of the Book Bank are decided by the User?s Committee which consists of Principal, all Chairpersons of the department, University Librarian, Hony. Incharge Library with the latter being the convener of the meeting and the Principal being the Chairperson. In the last three years 17,155 volumes were added in the Book Bank. As College Library is automated, books are issued through the Book Bank Module of the Libsys Software. The Book Bank caters to the need of about 1600 U.G. students by circulating among them about 80,000 books annually.
Periodical
Section
The College Library has a
Periodical Section in which the print journals are available. At present, the
College has subscribed 70 print journals pertaining to all the departments, out
of which 46 are international and 24 are national. The current issues of the
subscribed journals are available in the respective departments as these are
transferred there on their request.
Electronic
Periodical Section
This section was
established in 2001. The College Library is subscribing the following e-journals through INDEST consortium.
- ACM Digital Library (43 journals and 8 magazines) subscribed out of XII Plan grant
- IEEE ASPP Package (204 journals) funded by AICTE
- ASCE (37 journals) funded by AICTE
- ASME (29 journals) funded by AICTE
The College Library also
has course specific software ?NPTEL
Audio Video Lectures? on LAN. Apart from the above, Maulana Azad Library subscribes
UGC funded e-resources through Infonet and J-gate database. All these journals
can also be accessed on college LAN.
e-Books: The College Library has subscribed 32 e-books of different branches of studies and are accessed in the College. In addition, Maulana Azad Library has also subscribed e-books for different fields which can be accessed on college LAN.
